![]() Jewish Christian Studies Center presents Jesus 201 Class Begins September 29-October 27 Thursday mornings from 10-11:30 a.m. This is a FREE course Donations/Love Offerings are accepted to help offset the cost of materials. All donations are tax deductible through our 501(c)3 Did you know that Jesus of Nazareth was a practicing Jew? That His teachings were built largely out of the Hebrew Scriptures and the Jewish traditions of His time? That Christianity was originally a form of Judaism? Course Description: Jesus 201 is a course that presents Jesus in His Jewish context. We will view Jesus, and the Scripture in the environment of the diverse Israelite world of the 1st century. Various events that come up in the Gospels will be examined from a historical perspective. As a result, students will be exposed to the cultural and historical Jewish background that is often invaluable in interpreting Jesus in his original Jewish context. Jesus 101, 210, 301, 401: The Gospels are shown to be steeped in ancient Jewish culture, language, tradition, and spirituality. The class sessions recast Jesus and his followers as 1st-century Jews and explain seemingly familiar teachings in light of historical Jewish context and culture, recovering otherwise lost crucial nuances. “The Jesus” course addresses the diversity of Jewish thought typical of the Second Temple era and presents the world of Essenes, Pharisees, Sadducees, Scribes, Zealots as well as other Israelite movements from a variety of historical sources. Studying the gospel material from this perspective will challenge your presuppositions. Yet this process of re-reading the texts will allow you a deeper, more precise look into the world of the gospels. Without a doubt, this kind of engagement will lead you to a more authentic and careful interpretation of ancient texts. In this course we will: * read the Scripture and view it as the Christian reads it today. * look at it as the people during the time it was happening would be experiencing it. * look at it and see what a Jewish person would see in the Scripture as they read it today. We will set the foundation so as to help us understand, at a slower pace, the times of Jerusalem, the Galilee area, Samaria, and all of Israel. We will build upon each course level. The class will: make use of a large screen tv, PowerPoint presentation, pictures to help visualize the scene we will be talking about, worksheets (easy) in the class, as well as take home sheets, so you will have a record to go back to, to see the topic, the question, the Scripture where found, and the answer. Three ring binders will be handed out at the first class meeting. *If you attended Jesus 101, please bring your 3-ring binder and we will add to it. Email or call the JCSC to reserve your space in this class. Class size is limited. Feel Free To Forward This To Your Friends. Course is taught by Cynthia Douthit, Director of the JCSC. Classes will be held at Berit Olam Fellowship (Everlasting Covenant) 903D West Johnson Avenue in Springdale. (West Johnson Avenue is located one block North of Emma Ave and 71B.) Coffee, tea and water will be provided ______________________________________ Jesus 101 Class Date to be announced Course Description We will set the background for the New Testament and start with Luke 2. This will be the basics of who, what, when, where and why of Jesus. We will go from His birth to His death and the resurrection. (and touch briefly on the 1000 Year Reign) This will be about the Jesus that some people (in the Church)never knew.We will look at the life and times of Jesus The Christ. (Christ is the Greek word that means to "smear with oil") This will be a basic class...nothing fancy...questions can be asked...will have a large tv screen in the Torah teaching room so I can show pictures to help visualize the scene we will be talking about. I will give out the reading assignments so you can read the Scripture before class. We will have worksheets (easy) in the class, as well as take home sheets, so you will have a record to go back to, to see the topic, the question, the Scripture where found, and the answer. I will provide some handouts, give the definitions of the Greek or Hebrew words that I might use, etc. Three ring binders will also be handed out at the first class meeting. Judaism 101: Why Do They Do What They Do? New Class Times to be Announced. This class will be an overview as to why the Jewish people do certain things. Have you ever wondered: about the curls that some Jewish men wear on the sides of their head, but other Jewish men do not; what is the Sh'ma and why is it said; which way do Jews face around the world when praying; why they bless God and not the food and is it before or after the meal; what is the significance of the tallit (prayer shawl); what about the boxes and leather straps around their arm and forehead; and what are those small containers nailed to the doorframes of their homes or hotel rooms? We invite you to come learn about these topics, as well as several more concerning the Jewish Community. If you plan to attend, please email me (CynthiaDouthit@gmail.com) or call JCSC at 479.306.1269 ( JCSC and Berit Olam are a 501c3 non-profit ) |
